Question: How do I balance my family and business and my search for God?
Answer: Lahiri Mahasaya showed us that a family man with a career could find God through the daily practice of Kriya Yoga. He did lead the balanced life, putting aside time for daily prayer and meditation, for the needs of the family, for the needs of one’s local community, and of course dedication to his job.
To do this requires a degree of wisdom, courage and non-attachment. Family members, neighbors or co-workers may easily criticize your unwillingness to yield to their views on what is important in any given moment. Even Lahiri Mahasaya faced complaints from his wife on her concerns for their family’s security.
The balanced life for most people (unless already wealthy) will require putting aside unnecessary necessities, living simply and moderately in all things. This goes against the grain of a materialistic society or family. Misunderstandings can be expected and patience and kindness must be the response even if one’s determination is firm.
