Yugas Cycles: A New View of History from the Ancients @ Ananda Meditation Temple
May 5 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Taught by Hriman McGilloway

Taught by Hriman McGilloway and a team of Ananda Teachers

2 Thursdays, May 5 and 12th, 7:30 to 9 p.m.

An ancient belief has returned full circle to modern times to turn our view of human history “on its ear.” All great ancient civilizations taught that human consciousness is on a wheel of ascending and descending awareness. Just over 100 years ago a startling revelation and prediction was made that explains both the astro-mechanics AND the very nature of a 24,000 year cycle which is related to the precession of the equinox. It explains why knowledge is expanding at an exponential pace and whether it leads to destruction or survival and harmony.

Not a year passes that anomalous discoveries continue to seriously challenge the view that we only “recently” were ignorant cave dwellers. The pattern of human history suddenly is revealed as having a context and a direction of evolution: at times downward and more recently upward in awareness and intelligence.

We will learn:

Why literacy or cities aren’t necessarily progressive
Why art and knowledge began to degrade during history
Why the Renaissance looked back in history for knowledge
Why we now look forward to greater progress
Why humans are struggling and fighting so much today
What other civilizations taught about their past and our future

This two-week course is based on the groundbreaking book, “The Yugas,” by authors David Steinmetz and Joseph Selbie. Inspired by the introduction in a little known and abstruse tome,
“The Holy Science,” by Swami Sri Yukteswar (guru of Paramhansa Yogananda), this new (yet ancient) world view will turn your head around!

Nayaswami Hriman and a team of Ananda teachers will lead this presentation.

Sunday Service, 10 a.m. in Bothell

Sundays at Ananda Meditation Temple are the highlight of the week and are an excellent occasion for your first visit. Sunday Service is drawn from the ancient meditation tradition of the East and the mystical traditions of Christ, with scriptural readings from both the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita. Service includes music, chanting, a brief period of meditation, inspirational talk, and a beautiful ceremony called A Festival of Light.

Paramhansa Yogananda, author of  Autobiography of a Yogi and guru-preceptor for the work of Ananda, encouraged respect for all religions and all forms of sincere worship, service, and meditation. His own line of guru-preceptors include Jesus Christ, Babaji (formerly Krishna), Lahiri Mahasaya, and Swami Sri Yukteswar. Therefore we show particular respect and reverence to Yogananda and these illumined souls who sent him to the West. But our devotion is essentially and always, as he taught us, to God alone, and to the manifest divinity in those whom God sends to earth in human form to teach and uplift others.

At Ananda, each person who comes and participates does so with his or her own, inner realization and recognition. No one form of reverence, belief, or personal relationship to God or the gurus is expected or assumed. All are welcome to the weekly services and meditations. The only suggestion we make is to come with an open heart and an open mind.

East Meets West: The Sacred Science of Yoga @ East West Bookshop
May 10 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

3 Tuesdays, May 3, 10, & 17 from  7:30 to 9 p.m.

Taught by Suryadas Holliman

Taught by Suryadas Holliman

In 1894 in Serampore, near Calcutta, a quiet revolution began when a little known swami – in fact, an intellectual giant and renowned astronomer and astrologer – completed a small book, written in English at the behest of a (then) unknown Himalayan yogi (with no name other than the common appellation, “Babaji”). In this book, Swami Sri Yukteswar (who was to become the guru of the now famous Paramhansa Yogananda whose life story, “Autobiography of a Yogi” is a worldwide classic) writes with erudition a distillation of India’s ancient Sankhya, Vedanta and Yoga philosophies with comparisons to the Christian Bible. His mission was to show that the teachings of the rishi’s of India and those of the Bible point to the same universal truths. This small book (The Holy Science) is nothing less than a scripture for a new age. It may take generations for society at large to grasp these concepts and to realize their implications, but you need not wait. For the first time presented at East West Bookshop, Ananda teacher Suryadas Holliman brings clarity and inspiration to these revolutionary precepts which, otherwise as written, might seem abstruse to many.

Here are just some of the topics Suryadas will cover in this 3 -week class:

* How did Spirit become the creation?
* What is the nature of God?
* What is the cosmic vibration
* What is consciousness
* How can man rise above the illusion of creation and experience ultimate truth
* How the science of yoga (control of body, emotions and mind) can reveal the secrets of creation
* The importance of a pure heart in the search for truth
* Stages of creation in both the macrocosm and microcosm (of the human body)
* Why vegetarianism is the natural diet of humanity
* How to increase your life span
* How diet affects sexual impulses
* The planetary cycle of human consciousness based on the precession of the Equinox
